Each answer carries the records it came from and the rule that selected between them, built as the work happens rather than assembled under deadline.
Being right is not enough. When you’re asked how you arrived at a number, the trail has to already exist. Reconstructing it afterwards takes months and rarely satisfies anyone.

Values Overwritten
The losing value is kept, so any merge can be undone.
Nothing is discarded, so a false match is corrected rather than defended, with full history intact.

Reconstruction Required
Built as the work happens, not when the request arrives.
The evidence exists on the day the request lands, because it was never assembled after the fact.
What’s Going Wrong?
Two of your systems disagree. SAP says the exposure is $2.4m, Salesforce says $2.1m. Someone asks in a Slack thread which one to report, gets a good answer, and types it into the spreadsheet.
The call was right. It just left the reasoning in a chat channel and a hard-coded cell, with the rejected figure deleted.
SAP says $2.4m, Salesforce says $2.1m. Which one do we report?
The rule is registered entity takes precedence. So $2.4m.

What’s Going Wrong?
Power BI can tell you where the figure went. It’s in five reports, two of them filed externally.
What it can’t tell you is where the figure came from, because the chain leaves Power BI the moment it hits the spreadsheet. Meanwhile that spreadsheet was on a laptop that got wiped, the person who built it left in March, and the underlying record has been updated three times.
What’s Going Wrong?
The auditor asks how the figure was derived. Between you, you can produce the number and the reports it appeared in. Nobody can produce the reasoning.
At that point the question stops being whether the number was right and becomes whether you have controls at all.
Please provide the derivation of the $2.4m exposure figure.

I’ve got the figure and the reports it went into. Anyone know how it was actually derived?
@Priya built that.
She left in March and we’ve wiped her laptop...
How We Close the gap
Audit and Compliance attaches lineage as the figure is produced, so the answer shows its inputs, the rule that selected between them and the value that was rejected. Nothing has to be reconstructed, because nothing was discarded.
Master Data Management keeps every source value rather than letting the last write win, and holds each state with the date it applied from. Any record can be read as it stood on the day a decision was made, and any merge can be unwound.
